Blockstream co-founder Peter Ville confirmed that the next version of the Bitcoin Core client will include Tor Network address support for the latest third version, which will be the new standard next year.
It is expected that old V2 addresses will become obsolete on October 15, 2021.
Bitcoin Core cryptographic software
Recall that Bitcoin Core is a full client for connecting to the Bitcoin network, node settings and block validation. Software development and updates are supervised by a circle of independent developers of the main cryptographic currency. The client is the main and most popular among coin users, which is noticeably different from the situation with the same Etherium, where the number of clients is much larger.
Download the latest version of Bitcoin Core 0.20.1 on this site. Before downloading, you need to make sure that your computer has enough free memory – you need more than 350 GB of space to store the entire blockchain, and the figure will grow every day. Usually it takes several days to load all data about transactions in the network.
We checked the actual data for comparison: today the Ethernodes platform allocates seven of the largest clients of the Etherium network. The most popular of them is Geth, which accounts for 81.9 percent of nodes.

Full anonymity in new update
And now back to Bitcoin. The BIP 155 offer, which contains support information for new addresses, is already integrated into the current reference implementation of the client. With the release of version 0.21, V3 address support will take effect. The update itself will be released “around December”, said Ville. In addition to V3 addresses, the new version of Bitcoin Core will also support the so-called “gossip” function, allowing hidden nodes to find other nodes to connect via V3 platforms in the Tor Network.
The Tor Network is based on software for so-called “onion routing”. Thanks to it, messages in the network are transmitted through several network nodes in encrypted form. At the moment, Tor users already have access to V3-addresses, and if you believe the words of Ville, the ability to interact directly with them will also be available to fans of cryptographic software. Here is his quote, which is given by Decrypt.
Bitcoin Core v0.21 will support Tor V3 addresses and BIP155 (which supports “gossip” throughout the network). V2 addresses are outdated from last month and will be disabled in October 2021.
The second version addresses have been used in Tor for almost a decade. In July this year, the anonymous browser development team announced that on October 15, 2021, the second revision addresses “will be decommissioned”.
In September, an interesting topic was raised inside the Blockchain community: amateurs of cryptographic software wondered what would happen to Bitcoin if all Bitcoin Core developers suddenly disappeared. As the famous Community representative Adam Back noted, even in the worst-case scenario for Bitcoin it will be possible to create a new project on GitHub. Accordingly, nothing terrible will happen to the cryptovite and its client. Read more about such prospects in a separate article.
Note that the Bitcoin Core website can also be found via Tor – this became possible in March this year. That is, the main developer platform of Bitcoin remains outside of centralized controls, it cannot be “canceled” or closed in any way. And this is a great example of how exactly the real decentralization should work.
